What is a Community Foundation?

The concept of a Community Foundation is as ingenious as it is simple – it is a means to build, over time, substantial funds for the community through contributions.

The Community Foundation is a hybrid.  Unlike our cousin, the private foundation (whose financial base most likely comes from a single donor, family or company), the Community Foundation garners its support from the public.  It grows because individuals, corporations, and even government entities and other nonprofits believe in it and help its continual growth year after year.

The Community Foundation is unlike other nonprofits that focus on specific area of interest, such as healthcare, disaster relief and the arts or specific causes such as poverty, heart disease and classical music.

The Community Foundation looks to the well-being of the total community, not just a part of it.

What does our Community Foundation do?

The Community Foundation Serving SW Colorado was established in 1998 to improve the quality of life in the Four Corners. And also to build a culture of giving to and supporting the many non-profits that serve our area.

In 2011, this is what was granted through the Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado:

  • $400,000 in grants
  • $354,000 in scholarship
  • $561,000 in programs

What area do you serve?

The Community Foundation serves the five counties in SW Colorado -- LaPlata, Archuleta, Monutezuma, Dolores and San Juan. Some donors have interests elsewhere that they fund through the Community Foundation.
